These ancient Universities are amongst the most prestigious institution in the world and all were founded between the 12th and 16th centuries. Here are the 6 oldest and most famous Universities in the United Kingdom.

University Of Oxford – The oldest University in the English speaking world and also the very first University to be established within the UK.

The University Of Cambridge – The second-oldest University in the English speaking world. It was founded in the year 1209. Cambridge’s libraries hold around 15 million books.

The University of St Andrews – The first University in Scotland founded in the 15th century. In 1544 the university banned beards, the carrying of weapons, gambling, and football.

The University Of Glasgow – The fourth oldest University in the UK founded in 1451. Originally located in Glasgows high street but has since been relocated to Gilmorehill on the West side of the City since 1870.

University Of Aberdeen – The University Of Aberdeen was founded in 1495 by The Bishop Of Aberdeen. It is Scotlands third oldest University and the UK’s fifth oldest.

University Of Edinburgh – Founded in 1582 and the sixth oldest University in the UK. It was founded by the Edinburgh Town Council and was originally a college of Law.
