For many, going to university will be the first time living away from home so it’s understandable that many will be homesick. It isn’t always easy to embrace your new found independence and make the most of it. There are expectations for your uni experience to live up to. Below are some useful ways to help deal with homesickness.
Bring Home Comforts – Take a few items that remind you of home, whether it’s a photo album, bedding or something else. The more homely you make your new place the more it will feel like home.
Explore Your Local Surroundings – Homesickness often occurs due to not being familiar with your surroundings. Get to know your local area by visiting parks and engage in the activities you enjoy most. You could also go out jogging or take part in other exercises.
Keep In Touch – Although you may be miles away, you can still keep in touch with your family and friends back home. Remember that they may only be a call away. Call them regularly or video call so you can see them. You don’t want to call too much though as this could make you become more homesick.
Don’t Spend All Your Time In Your Room – Isolating yourself in your room isn’t going to help. You will likely spend more time pondering about home and this could increase your feelings of homesickness. You could go to the library and spend time studying or also consider getting a part time job.
