How to Sleep Better: A Mezzino Guide

Not being able to switch off a very common problem nowadays, and students are no exception. In fact, with stress, sociability & schedule changes it can be especially hard to get consistently great sleep during your time at uni. With World Sleep Day coming up this Friday (13th March), we thought we’d share some tips on how to get a good night’s rest, as well as the benefits of doing so!

How To Drift Off More Easily

Minimise Screen Time

Try to switch off phones, tablets, laptops or anything with a bright screen at least an hour before bed. Light keeps you awake by inhibiting your melatonin production (the sleep hormone), while the content on your phone keeps your brain stimulated when it really could do with a rest. We love a fun book as a screen time alternative, to help you wind down and snooze.

Make your space cosy

Turn your room into your own little sanctuary. Keeping your bedroom cool, dark and comfy will create a great sleep environment.

Avoid caffeine before bed

Caffeine stays in your blood way after you’ve stopped feeling the buzz, cut it out at least 6 hours before going to sleep to help your body properly relax.

Stick to a regular schedule

Aim to go to bed and wake up at the same time each day to build a healthy sleep routine. Your body has an internal clock that adapts to your activity, so after a few days you should find it easier to drift off at a given time!

Why You Need a Good Night’s Rest

Sleep plays such a vital role in good health and your wellbeing, and can affect how you think, react, work, learn and interact with others. While a good night’s rest can help you recover after a gym sesh, and keep your cognitive functioning high for your studies, consistently poor sleep can cause a whole range of issues (in extreme cases), from hypertension to impaired immune functioning and diabetes. We know that may sound a bit intense, but it’s so important to look after your body where you can!

What Is World Sleep Day?

World Sleep Day is an opportunity to promote sleep health and get into some good habits, so that you can wake up feeling refreshed and ready to go. There’s a whole community dedicated to it, make sure you get involved with the hashtag #WorldSleepDay if you’re taking part and want to connect with others.

We understand how important a good rest is, beyond just one day, so we have a range of comfy beds and cosy rooms that you can make your own across the whole of the UK and Ireland!
